southern flourish magazine: spring 2011

I'd like to share some shots from one of my most recent projects. The Nimbus Factory was asked to collaborate with the magazine Southern Flourish to create an advertorial based on the art of the handwritten recipe card (using our recipe cards). I was delighted to photo style the shoot which took place in my very own kitchen. :)

I tried making a Chocolate Hazelnut Nutella cake to use as a prop, but it turned into a bit of a disaster. I sure had fun scarfing the leftover nutella down though. ;)

tim lisko: the shinkansen series

Here are some amazing shots by my former SCAD professor, Tim Lisko. He took these photos while traveling on a bullet train from Tokyo to Osaka.

High train speeds and lengthened exposures create an image so blurred as to produce strong patterns, lines, colors, depths—something that turned out to be a sense of balance, of simplicity, of stillness.

I am partial #2. Excellent work, Tim!

IKEA recently released a book on baking entitled Hembakat är Bäst (Homemade is Best). Photographer Carl Kleiner and stylist Evelina Bratell were the masterminds behind these lovely layouts.

matthew kern: photo collage artist

I recently found Kern's site stashed in my bookmarks, and I'm really glad I revisited it. Kern uses a Polaroid SX-70 camera to build his layered photo collages. Using charcoal, pencil, ink transfers, and other mediums, he alters each images' front and back then he groups those images, always maintaining the Polaroid grid as anchor.

Artist Statement:
My inspiration sometimes comes from the actual world where the documentation of experience serves as the foundation of the collage, or I can be inspired by dreams, or a response to an environment or a memory or an emotion.

Layers, Pegasus

The Start Of A Letter

I think his use of the deep blue color in Pegasus makes the piece even more appealing. The shadows create layers themselves, almost making the piece seem 3D. The Start Of A Letter is my favorite one because it is so full of movement and growth. I enjoy seeing how each closeup image contributes to the overall unity of the piece.

Falling

This past weekend, I fell in love with Savannah all over again. I had yet to feel that way since my move back here in July. But as I went for a walk in Ardsley Park- admiring the trees, draping moss, and radiant leaf spectrums- I finally felt it. I'm back in my most favorite city and am so thankful to be here.

Always

I promise my blog isn't just devoted to weddings although it may seem that way. I have attended 2 weddings in 3 weeks that have been blog-worthy, which is why there has been an overload of bells and brides. This past weekend, I traveled to southern California to be in my close friends' Hilary and Josh's wedding. They had so many wonderful handmade elements in their wedding- from a fingerprint tree guestbook to felted boutonnieres and corsages fashioned by the bride herself. They were hitched in an open field nestled in the mountains and the reception was held in a nearby old western town (also known as Paramount Ranch, home to many famous John Wayne movies). It was way cool.

(L) The Fingerprint Tree- guests placed their print on a branch and signed their name. (The groom's ring was also inspired by the fingerprint theme- not pictured).

(R) A trunk of costumes for guests to dress up as those from the wild wild west.

Her dress was purchased on eBay with many alterations made by the

mother and grandmother of the bride. The groom sported gray Van slip-ons
with his dark gray 3-piece suit.
